Profile: David Goyer (Writer)

goyer-small.gif

David Goyer, from the beginning of his writing career, always had a knack for bringing the surreal world of comic books and fantasy worlds to life.

Even when he was a younger student, he made deals with his English teachers to write one original work each week instead of the normal classload to write what he wanted and stretch his creativity. Later in his school career, he wanted to go to Michigan State and become a homicide investigator, but was stopped prematurely by a group of his teachers pushing him more towards the school he eventually ended up at - U.S.C. Film School.

He worked his way through, finally honing his skills and confidence until his graduation in 1988. Though times were tough for writers around the time, one of his screenplays still was made into a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie (Death Warrant) kick-starting his movie career.

The Death Warrant script was followed by several more scripts of the same kind of “lowbrow fare”, but he was quckly brought back up into the spotlight with his scripts for The Crow: City of Angels and Dark City. Of course, one of the scripts that Goyer was most well-known for about this time was Blade, staring Wesley Snipes. He made his directorial debut in another work he wrote, ZigZag while working with the sequels in the Blade franchise - Blade II and Blade Trinity.

Most recently, however, Goyer worked with the screenplays for one of 2005’s biggest hits - Batman Begins. With the success of that movie, he’s been tapped to work up a sequel, just announced, along with several other in the “superhero” genre - Ghost Rider, The Flash, and Captain America.

Profile: Doug Liman (Director)

Doug Liman (small)

Doug Liman, born in July of 1965, graduated first from Brown University in 1988 and then from the USC School of Cinema-Television in 1992.

Some of his earliest work includes the direction of movies like “Swingers” and “Go”, quickly followed by major hits like “The Bourne Identity” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”. He’s played himself on several TV shows, mostly doucmentaries about the movies he was directing on. His work isn’t just on movies, though - he branched out in 2003-2004 for a stint directing on the popular TV show “The O.C.” and more recently in 2006 directing the TV series “Heist” (which is just now hitting the airwaves).

His list as executive producer is equally as long, and includes other movies such as “See Jane Run”, “Cry_Wolf”, and a TV series based on the movie of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” (in pre-production).

Current projects include the aforementioned “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” TV series, the third in the Bourne series, “The Bourne Ultimatum”, and “The Killing Floor” - a thriller surrounding the stalking of a literary agent with events surrounding the aparement he now occupies.

Lou Taylor Pucci auditions for role of Griffen

Following up on a lead from the Internet Movie Database forums, it seems that the actor Lou Taylor Pucci has auditioned for a lead role in the upcoming movie - the role of Griffen, a new character opposite Davey.

Pucci has had staring roles in several independant movies such as The Chumscrubber and Thumbsucker. He will also play a part in the upcoming film Fast Food Nation alongside several well known actors/actresses that is currently in post-production. Sounds like they’re heading in the right direction…I don’t think, especially with the folks at the helm, that there’ll be any danger of this turning into a “teen movie” kind of situation. The story doesn’t exactly lend itself to that anyway…

Note, the deadline for this call was February 4th so it is no longer viable. Please do not contact anyone mentioned above.

The Toronto Sun Reports

There’s a new bit in the Toronto Sun that I found released on MArch 10th, 2006 about the movie:

JUMPING TO TORONTO: Speaking of running away, hopefully director Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) didn’t have his heart set on sampling the foie gras poutine at famed Montreal eatery Au Pied de Cochon.

Jumper, directed by Liman and based on Steven Gould’s novel about a teen with teleportation powers, will be shifting its shoot from Montreal to Toronto in order to avoid a potentially ugly dispute between two film technician labour unions in Quebec.

Quebec’s main film tech union, the Alliance Quebecoise des Technicians de l’Image et du Son (AQTIS), was prepared for a showdown with the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE), which is trying to make inroads in representing film crews in Quebec.

Not surprisingly, each union is blaming the other for Jumper teleporting to Ontario.

Barring a last-ditch bid to bring the production back to La Belle Province, Jumper will begin shooting here in the coming weeks. No cast has been announced.

Making the (Movie) Leap

It’s always interesting to see that a book you like is going to become a movie. For a lot of people, it’s a “wow, that’s going to be so cool” experience. I’m a bit more jaded than that on the subject (one too many bad sci-fi adaptations, I guess) but so far, this move from the page to the screen seems like it’s on the right track. The screenwriters have already brought us some great flicks so far, and with the great material to work from (thank you, Mr. Gould) there’s hope yet.

So, to start things off right around here, I wanted to get some feedback from those of you out there that have managed to find this site and want to share some thoughts on the books themselves.

So, a few questions: Have you read either “Jumper” or “Reflex” by Gould? What were your takes on it? Did it captivate you or were you frustrated trying to keep up?

Post your reviews/comments below…

A quote from Gould

From his site (Feb 15th, 2006):

Heard a bit about the MOVIE. Looks like they’ll be filming in Canada and they’re working on the final tweaks of the script. Final is a funny term but I believe the saying goes, “Screenplay’s are never finished, they’re surrendered.” And of course, there’s the magic that happens when a director and actors collide with the script and the setting. Then CGI and the edit. Music. All of them can radically change the tone and feel of the resulting work.

I can hardly wait.

He also mentions in an earlier post (Feb 1st, 2006) that having the combination of David Goyer and Jim Uhls working on the screenplay is “he literary equivalent of winning the lottery”.

The story so far…
